January 2, 2022

The Gordon Galbraith Endowed Faculty Scholar in Agricultural Education Fund was established through a gift from Thomas T. Nakano, ’89, and Carol J. Magness, ’92 to honor Gordon Galbraith’s exceptional contributions to the field of agricultural education as a mentor, advisor and leader of Oregon Future Farmers of America. The fund will support future generations of agricultural educators in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Gordon Galbraith received his bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University’s College of Agriculture in 1966. After a brief stint teaching high school vocational agriculture, he worked for the Oregon Department of Education in agricultural education, serving as advisor for the state Future Farmers of America. He mentored hundreds of state FFA officers for decades and served on the FFA Foundation board in retirement. Over his lifetime, Galbraith impacted thousands of agriculture students and educators, including Carol Magness.

Carol Magness has played an important role in the Oregon FFA, including as Oregon FFA state reporter from 1988-89, where she was elected to represent over 5,000 FFA students. While in this role, she benefitted from the support and mentorship of Gordon Galbraith, the state FFA advisor at the time. Magness received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Oregon State. She retired after serving as vice president and loan officer at Northwest Farm Credit Services.

Business alumnus Thomas Nakano is an active volunteer leader who has served on the OSU Foundation Board of Trustees, College of Agricultural Sciences Dean’s Advisory Council and OSU Alumni Association Board of Directors, including as president. He is executive vice president and chief administrative and financial officer of AgWest Farm Credit.
