Milton Harris, a 1926 OSU graduate and noted chemist, gave the first $1 million gift to OSU. The university honors donors who have followed his example of generosity, making cumulative gifts, pledges and estate gifts at the $1 million, $5 million, and $10 million, $25 million and $50 million levels. These donors are recognized on the OSU Legacy Wall in the Memorial Union.

Oregon State's most generous donors are honored on the OSU Legacy Wall: a permanent tribute to those who, throughout university history, have made gifts of $1 million or more during their lifetimes and through their estates. Located outside the Memorial Union Horizon Room, this list of households and organizations – presently at 455 – is updated annually.

Benjamin Horning from the class of 1914 represents the earliest class year on the list. A quote from the OSU Creed, used in the 1929 dedication of the Memorial Union, appears at the top of the Legacy Wall: “A heritage from the deeds and dreams of yesterday, a reality with the students of today, and the assurance of a magnificent tomorrow.”
