Remembering James Coleman, Lifetime Trustee

Business alumnus led the world’s largest wine company

James E. Coleman, ’58, one of Oregon State’s most prominent alumni business leaders and an OSU Foundation Lifetime Trustee, will be remembered for his dedication to the College of Business and the university, leaders said following the August 20 death of the Modesto, California, resident. He was 90.

Jim spent his career at E. & J. Gallo Winery, helping the family-owned and operated business become the largest wine producer in the world. He began his career working for his father-in-law, Julio Gallo, who had him learn the wine business from the ground up, and Jim eventually became co-chairman. Jim met his late wife Sue at Oregon State, where she studied home economics, and he was in the business school. Jim completed his degree at the University of Oregon but remained connected to OSU, serving many years on the OSU Foundation Board of Trustees. 

“Jim had high expectations for OSU, and when he shared his expertise, we all sat up a little straighter and listened intently,” said Shawn L. Scoville, OSU Foundation President and CEO. “He and Sue loved OSU, and they loved to spend time on campus. Their engagement sent a powerful message that OSU merited involvement and philanthropic investment.”

Members of the Harris Society, the Colemans supported a family business program that honors Jim’s father, A. E. Coleman. Stricken by polio at age 9, Alfred Coleman overcame his disability to become a successful businessman, founding the Coleman Jewelers store that operated in Corvallis for 85 years. Jim and his two brothers – Richard A. Coleman, ’55, and John N. Coleman, ’64, now deceased – were profoundly inspired by Alfred’s indomitable spirit, deep-seated determination, resilience and strength of character that helped Jim create his own legacy in business.
