Advice for building fulfilling work relationships
By Karla Rockhold, Director of Alumni Career Engagement, OSU Alumni Association
February is a perfect time to reflect on the relationships we build in our lives — especially at work. The average person will spend nearly one-third of their lifetime at work! Therefore, meaningful connections with colleagues can greatly improve the quality of your life and enhance job satisfaction.
When we feel comfortable and connected with colleagues, we are more likely to share ideas openly, offer constructive feedback and actively participate in team projects. However, fostering these bonds in diverse, multigenerational teams requires a thoughtful approach.
Why invest in work friendships?
- Boosts morale: Strong bonds create a sense of belonging and make work more enjoyable.
- Enhances collaboration: Trust and communication lead to better results.
- Encourages personal growth: Learning from colleagues with different skills and perspectives expands knowledge and insights.
- Reduces stress: A supportive work environment acts as a buffer against workplace stress and makes challenging situations more manageable.
Strategies to build connections across generations:
- Start with small gestures: A smile and a friendly greeting daily sets a positive tone. Kindness, shown consistently, breaks barriers.
- Show genuine interest: Take time to learn about your colleagues as individuals. Ask open-ended questions like, “What do you enjoy doing outside of work?” Listening actively shows you care and lays the foundation for meaningful conversations.
- Embrace generational differences: Each generation brings unique experiences and perspectives to the table. Show appreciation for these differences by seeking their input and valuing their contributions.
- Collaborate and celebrate: Propose team-building activities that foster camaraderie and shared learning. Celebrating milestones and showing appreciation for colleagues’ contributions and hard work also go a long way.
- Use technology thoughtfully: Leverage tools like messaging apps and video calls while respecting communication preferences. Some colleagues may prefer face-to-face conversations over emails or chats, while others might thrive in digital communication.
This February, take heart that making time to connect with your colleagues through a thoughtful conversation, a shared laugh or work on a collaborative project will strengthen bonds that make work more fun and fulfilling for everyone.
