Hiram Larew established an endowed faculty scholar fund in 2024 to support a faculty member in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology who is involved in the College of Agricultural Sciences’ global engagement efforts. Passionate about international agriculture and collaboration, Larew has long been a supporter of global travel opportunities for students, having founded the Global Experience Fund in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Larew served as director of international programs at the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture. During his tenure, he transformed international agricultural science programs into models for sustainable development overseas by fostering partnerships between American universities, businesses, governments and charitable organizations to assist countries around the world. Previously, he worked at the U.S. Agency for International Development, in the office of Sen. Charles Schumer and for USDA's Agricultural Research Service.

 

A published poet, Larew’s poems have been nominated for four Pushcart Prizes. He founded Poetry X Hunger, an initiative that is “turning poetry into food.”

 

Larew has served as a volunteer for Oregon State University and OSU Foundation in addition to teaching an OSU Honors College colloquium course on poetry and world hunger.

 

Larew earned his master’s degree in botany in 1977 and his Ph.D. in entomology in 1982 from OSU. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia.
