The Gray Family Chair for Innovative Library Services was established by a family of alumni with a long history of generous giving to Oregon State University. The family's deep commitment to education and scholarship at OSU began in the 1940s and continues to this day. Their gift allows OSU Libraries to expand innovative means of accessing and delivering information to students, faculty, staff, and other constituents of the university, with the end goal of further strengthening OSU's distinction as an information provider.

The Gray Family Chair was designed to be flexible. Specifically, the chair supports strategies within the library for making print and digitized information more readily accessible, and for developing effective methods to adapt advances in information technology to meet the needs of researchers, students, and the citizens of Oregon. On a broader level, OSU Libraries leadership and the chair holder have the freedom to adapt the position's focus as the focus of the Libraries changes. As the chair holder anticipates trends relevant to library services, he or she will align the direction of Gray Family Chair work to reflect the most current developments in information sciences.
